Analysis Of Chosen Artist

As my chosen song for my video is one of Paramore’s I have analysed one of their other videos. I have chosen Decode as it is one of their most well known songs at this moment in time. This video is a soundtrack video to the phenomenal film, ‘Twilight’; because of this, parts of the movie are incorporated within the video. At the start of the video, a ‘Twilight’ scene is set first, showing a picture of the forest that is in the film and is also where the performance side is set. It then cuts with a fade to the lead guitar as this is the main instrument being used at that precise moment in the song. The cuts continue for a few more seconds, each time still being a fade, switching from the band to different clips of the movie. All the clips shown in this period of time are ones that have been set in the forest. When the lead singer starts to sing, the camera is at a high angle forcing her to look up, giving the illusion that she is so small in such a big setting; the forest. As the vampires in the movie are all fast runners, the camera pans quickly to give the same effect to show each individual members of the band walking through the forest alone, all acting as tracker vampires, linking the actual video to the movie clips even more. Sometimes the band members are looking like they are re-enacting part of the movie. Every so often one of the band walks out from behind the tree, and at one point this is then followed with a clip from the movie where one of the actors do the exact same thing. This makes the movie and the video more connected. Throughout the video the camera is never doing a simple shot i.e. close up. The camera always seem to be either panning around the band, showing all members, doing a high angle shot, zooming from a high angle to straight in front of the band and so on. Also, when the song is at a point where a key instrument is being heard then the camera focuses on that instrument, and sometimes shows it in slow motion to add extra effect. This makes the video more interesting and creative looking. When showing the singer, she is shown in two different settings, either singing with the band behind her or singing by herself with a blurred out background of the forest so that the main focus is on her. The band is also shown in two different settings, either playing in the band, or being shot walking around the forest acting as trackers. These parts of the video are always cleverly placed after a part of the movie has been shown where someone has started to run away; so it's as if the band members are trying to track them down. The lyrics ‘...if you’re a man at all’ are always skilfully paired with one of the situations that show that the character Edward may not be just a normal human. Nearing the end of the video, clips from the end/climax of the movie are played. This also shows that the end of the video is nearing. The video then finishes with two scenes, one of the band standing in a circle and the other of a clip from the very beginning of the ‘Twilight’ movie where a deer is running through the forest. It ends with the deer being caught by someone jumping out from behind a tree, this links back to earlier scenes of the band (hiding behind trees), and then eventually fades into a bright white light.
