Taylor Swift-You Belong With Me analysis

Taylor swift- you belong with me
The video is based upon a high school teenager who loves the popular guy but he is with the typical American high school cheerleader. The video is all narrative and goes through her story about her and the guy. At the start of the video it shows him arguing with his girlfriend and her worried about if he is okay or not. The fact that there houses are right next to each other, and the relationship they have her being the one in love. She appears weak when it comes to him and it hurts her to see him with his girlfriend. The time she spends with him is amazing and easy. The visual of the video is great, with bright colours as it is a typical American high school romance story. The structure of the video is all narrative based following a story as well as referring to the lyrics of the song. When she says part of the song, the image links into it, such as ‘I’m on the bleachers’ this then shows you her on the bleachers. It is based on the concept of romance and high school life. In the end of the video, it has a typical fairytale ending and she ends up with the guy she loves at prom. The shots are effective as they use close ups of her and him to show their facial expressions and how each one feels (emotions) which is important in this genre. The first shot is quite ironic as she lives exactly next door to him. A shot from inside his room looking at her is also effective as you see the relationship in some ways. Another effective shot that is used is when you see her but by her reflection in the mirror as she dresses up. Some edits are faded as it moves between scenes; others are quick jump shots to see what each character is doing, such as talking by writing and to who. The video is simple and doesn’t really include and special effects, but the simplicity makes it good. The mise-en-scene is again very American, with the typical teenager bedrooms and house. The popular girl’s convertible car which is stereotypical and often seen in movies. There is a football stadium as well which is in every American high school. Then the final scene of where prom is set, typical formal costumes as well as in other scenes, football and band costumes. I think that the video did so well due to the simplicity to it. The fact that it doesn’t include special effects, it is just basic and well edited. Also how the images correlate with the lyrics. Taylor Swift is a newer artist in the charts but this record won her a video music award for best video. This video does have intertexuality but mainly with movies, such as typical American high school films. Such as ‘She’s all that’. The target audience for this type of music video is pretty easy, it is teenagers and mainly girls as it’s about high school romance. The video itself targets it, but also her image links to high school.
Cd cover
The main centre image is Taylor Swift herself, and her expression shows that she is fearless linking to the name of the album. Also it focuses on her beauty and appears very natural. She also appears very independent; however her facial expression does look almost scared or vulnerable in contrast. She uses the same effect as Jordan Sparks using the signature to add a personal touch, maybe linking to the fact that she is a new artist out.

Poster
Again the comparison of the lyrics to the poster is major, one line of the lyrics is shown in the main image which takes up the whole page. She uses her own signature again for that personal touch as well as the title of the song being hand written, almost like doodling when in class. It shows the narrative also, of her being the geek and the typical jock and cheerleader couple. This immediately attracts the teenager audience as the main image is in a high school. The picture is perfect for the storyline and making the viewer immediately know what it is about.
