Jordin Sparks-SOS (let the music play) analysis

Jordan Sparks- SOS (let the music play)
The video is based around the common topic of girls who are being cheated on by their boyfriends, in this video she rely’s on their friends who help her get him to come back. Once she dances this is enough for him to realise what he’s missing, it is a successful technique to show her off. In the video it shows many scenes of just Jordan dancing showing independence as well as emotions. She appears to be strong and doesn’t care about the fact that her boyfriend is dancing with another girl, she doesn’t want to appear weak. It uses a flashing effect which helps show you her attitude in different scenes, such as with the black background and then in the club. The video has a performance effect used often throughout, focusing on just her singing (key figure), however it has a story to it which is the dancing in the club. It swaps between the guy flirting with another girl, then to his girlfriend who appears angry and has friends to help her get him back and so helps the audience to see quickly and clearly what the video is about. The structure of the video is both performance and concept based. Her singing being the performance part as mentioned above but also the dancing concept, which in the video is the technique in which the girls get their boyfriends. Dancing is seen as a key weapon in winning back the boyfriend. The shots are very effective as there is numerous close ups of her face and her expression of aggression and determination. The concept of texting her friends for help, there is close up shots on a phone to get the story across to the audience and also for convergence, the technique if effective and makes it more appealing to the audience as it uses new objects to portray the story. Special effects are used part way through the video with people dancing but in an artistic fashion. The dancers appear through liquid (effective) but then appear human; also a symmetrical effect is applied. The Mise-en-scene is mainly a club scene, where the flashing lights, bold colours and dancers create a great effect of modern music, dancing and independence of women. Also the scene of just her in a black room, the gold sequined dress stands out making her look good and proud of her image (centred around her). I believe the video did well due to the special effects and unique modern dancing used. Again it relates to modern day society for young adults and teenagers. Jordan Sparks is a newer artist than others in the charts and so this video will progress her career, and the video relates to many other videos out at the moment due to the clubbing scenes and independent females. The target audience for this video would have been teenagers/young adults aging around 16-30. They are targeted through the modern video and narrative.
CD cover
The main centre image is Jordan sparks herself, but only has half the face shown which indicates mystery, there could be another possible meaning to her personality and so the audience has yet to discover it. This is an effective technique as her music could tell the whole story. The use of the colour red indicates love and danger, a very ‘stand out’ colour, its reason to catch the reader’s attention. Her name is her autograph which indicates that it’s personal to her, and so this personal touch shows this.

Poster
Alot of white space is available but not used, usually this could be seen as bad however it is used affectively as it still stands out as all the focus is on the colour image which of course is her main centre image. It implies her by herself is the best, she has much independence. Again it has her personal touch with the signature in her handwriting which is the same as the CD cover. The style barely covers the screen, her name is important with the effect of ‘in your face’ to make it apparent to the viewer.
