Shakira-She Wolf analysis

Shakira- She Wolf
This video focuses on both narrative and visual effects. It is based upon independent strong women preying on men, which involves the term ‘She wolf’. The whole video appears at night due to the wolf concept. She appears in charge, seductive and independent. The narrative follows the story of what she does on a night time to the men in clubs and how she gets what she wants. She seems provocative and the video mainly includes sexual dancing, mainly belly dancing. Her movement’s suggests her ideas on what she is about and what she does. The visual representation is dark and moonlight type nights which are effective for comparison to the lyrics. The structure of the video is both narrative and concept based. The concepts are based on wolves, they do this by the mise-en-scene such as the moonlight and cages. Her singing links to the movement of her dancing, which can be seen as the dancing expressing her nature and prey. There is some great shots included in the video, such as close ups at the start which express her attitude which comes across aggressive and seductive. A point of view shot is used of her back to you walking through doors towards the moon. The moon acts as a symbol of wolves. Zooming is used to get a clear view of Shakira herself. However the shot of her eyes at the start appear innocent unlike the other shots. The edits are mainly straight cuts and jump shots as they move with the fast beat, as well as moving in synchronization of her dancing robotic moves. In some parts the camera is handheld which can sometimes disorientate the audience but that’s what the songs about, with her and men and in the club. Special effects are used and it suits the genre of music and video, when in the club scene all the focus is on Shakira where as the people dancing around her are blurred. This effect is great to get attention on the singer and her character in the song. The scene of her dancing on the roof, the background is edited to look mysterious and scary in some ways to link with wolves. The mise-en-scene varies a lot, but all have comparison. It starts off where she looks innocent with her partner in a normal bedroom, with simple innocent clothes. The next scene is in some sort of cave however it appears to be red sparkly walls which could be intended as jewels or diamonds. The outfit she wears is very provocative as it shows most of her body. Another part of the video is set in a cage to symbolise the wolf again being locked up, again she is wearing provocative clothing as it is a simple skin coloured leotard. Another scene is in a club in which is the usual style very modern and she wears the same outfit as on the cave scene. A real wolf is also in the video to link with the title and story, as one moment it’s a wolf, the next shot it’s a woman crawling. The final scene is on a roof top which is dark, urban and mysterious judging by the full moon and clouds. All scenes are effective for getting the story across to the audience. I believe the video has done so well because of its aggressive and independent females involved especially Shakira. This video brings a new perspective on women and the fact that there strong. Not only does this apply to women but men to as they would consider it attractive. This video does include intertexuality, such as linking with ‘Maneater’ by ‘Nelly Furtado’, both of which are about dominant females who are in control and independent. Shakira is already a known artist however this song was more or less a comeback after a while and so it has progressed her career. The target audience would be females aging around 16-30.
Cd cover
The title in this cover is what mainly stands out as it takes up most of the space as well as being in big block letters. This alone will capture the reader’s attention. However Shakira isn’t as big but she is centred in the middle of the cover which alone makes her stand out. What she is wearing has a big impact also as it is very sexy looking as she is barely covered up. The colours are simple which makes it effective, basic colours except for the red in the title which stands out.

Poster
This image is from the video itself, from the scene where she is dancing in the cage. Again what she is wearing is provocative and sexy. This is enough to capture the reader’s attention. However the title stands out also, it may not be as big but the colour of red makes it stand out. The image itself suggests what type of song it is as well as the title. she is provaocative, mysterious and in some ways intimidating to men. The image sums up the lyrics which is what was meant to be put out to the viewer, giving you an idea of whats in the song.
